The second weekend of April, we planned a camping trip to Lake Roosevelt with our friends, the Webbs. Now that they live in Arizona and have settled in, I'm personally hoping for many, many more fun adventures like this one. Lake Roosevelt is conveniently located halfway between our two cities but the fishing wasn't awesome so we might not be sold on this location. But we'll find something that works! We left early Friday morning and found a great spot just up the hill from the lake. The hill was steep enough to (mostly) deter the kids but not steep enough to make walking down annoying. After setting up camping and relaxing, my Jacob (referred hereafter as Wall since the other family's patriarch is also named Jacob - we'll call him Webb) drove over to the marina with the other family to pick up our rental platoon boat.
Just arrived and set up the Taj Mahal aka the tent
Not our RV but they were very nice neighbors
After getting fed and sunscreened, we headed out to try some fishing. We....had no luck. At all. Perhaps my fishing curse is contagious? It was still fun to be out on the boat and see the water. We did almost lose Speed's favorite hat but Wall saved the day. Hazel and Aayla (their youngest) were the only other two brave enough to jump in the water while we were out on the boat.
Apparently the best way to return a hat to a boat is by wearing it while swimming back
The plan was for him to sleep in his pack-n-play on the boat...not so much
Just before they took the icy plunge
We eventually headed back and I made our dinner while the menfolk went back out for another try at fishing around sunset. My younger two and the Webb girls went to bed pretty early but I made Hazel and Speed stay up late. It was a campout!! :-) Speed made it until 9:30 and Hazel went to bed when I did around 10:30. One of my favorite things about late nights on campouts is how funny my kids get. Don't get me wrong, they're funny most of the time. But they get all giggly and tell the weirdest stories - I just love it.
I never got them to explain what they were playing but it involved tossing the pillow around and a lot of cheering
It was an okay night, as far as first nights camping go, except for my cold/stuffed up nose and Zizah throwing up....that was gross. Thankfully she basically slept through it so once we wiped her off and gave her a new blanket, she slept the rest of the night. I still think she just coughed so hard that she gagged, etc.
The next day we had some quick breakfast and then gathered snacks and headed out on the boat again. The men had tried to fish most of the night as well and still hadn't caught anything, so our focus on the second day was more on enjoying the boat and exploring the lake. We still cast in occasionally but we had lots of fun between fishing spots as well.
There maybe have possibly also been this really embarrassing for Millie moment where she was holding someone's pole and her husband asked her to keep a good hold on the hook end with the bait to make sure it didn't go flopping around. Well, she grabbed it and screamed for about 20 seconds straight. Apparently she didn't realize the minnows we were fishing with were live bait and she's not such a fan of handling live fish. Oh the money we could have made from YouTube if we would've had a camera rolling...
So...she's Helga from "Hey, Arnold". That explains a LOT
They were supposed to be napping...hahahaha
Apparently it was FREEZING. Or something
Our plan for him to sleep on the boat worked much better the second day
We checked out the dam that created the lake and the bridge that we drove over to get to our camping spot. We also found this fun little island to play on the beach and .... we even caught some fish. Well, Wall caught a fish (I don't remember what kind it was - I'm better at identifying fish by their taste - maybe a small mouth bass or apache trout?) and Ellery (the oldest Webb) caught this huge carp. It was gratifying that someone caught something. After eating lunch on the island, it was about time to return the rental boat. We decided to all just head back to the marina and then we'd drive back to the campsite in Pink 5 (our suburban for those not in the know - and no, she's not actually pink). The unloading was actually uneventful but it reminded me of Lake Powell, just a BILLION times faster. :-)
The bridge and dam
The Webbs
The Walls
(our kids were too weird to pose - also, why didn't anyone tell me how awful that hat looks on me?!?)
It took Webb a minute or two to realize what we were all laughing at :-)
We're guessing these are the ruins of an earlier and smaller dam or of some structure build while they were constructing the current dam. Wall may have looked it up but I don't remember
Wall with his catch
Trying out the baby life vest for Powell - he wasn't a fan - I think we'll move him up to Speed's and get Speed a new one
Ellery with her carp
This fun plane kept taking off and landing near the island where we were hanging out
Then we did some more swimming in the lake and a group of people went over to see the results of the bass fishing competition that was being held on the lake that day. Apparently the winner was quite the beauty. Another lovely dinner and some more s'mores and we headed out around sundown. We had originally planned to stay that night but with my headcold and how drained everyone was, we all decided to head home. It was a fun but quick trip and hopefully we can do another something again soon. Perhaps with a few more fish this time. :-)
Poor sleepy boy
I grabbed this dollar store kite before our trip to CA in March so it was missing a few pieces by this trip, which is when I finally pulled it out of the package. Zizah tried so hard to get it to fly anyway - it was so cute
So she started dinner time like this...
...and ended it like this. She did eat almost the entire bag of BBQ chips herself. Oops. #mommyfail
Toasted marshmallows are still a bit too sticky
And yes, it was as yummy as it looks
Thor loves his Auntie Millie
And his crazy Uncle Webb
Thanks for coming, Webbs! When's the next trip?!? :-)
