(Disclaimer: I know we've had some much bigger and more life-changing events happen recently but I'm trying to keep my entries in chronological order. So I promise, I'll get to that whole new baby thing soon. In the meantime, check Facebook and Google+ for pictures if you're dying. Thanks.)
The last Saturday in March after Hazel's soccer stuff, we headed north to the Arizona Game and Fish Department's Outdoor Expo. Jacob heard about it somewhere and it looked like it might be fun and he was especially hoping to get good information about elk hunting in Arizona since he finally pulled for elk this year (YES!!!). We really didn't know what exactly to expect but we were blown away by how big the event was and the variety of things to see and do.
Our first stop was the catch and release fish tanks. The line was pretty long so we just helped the kids fish but it was really fun for them, especially since we hadn't been fishing for several months. Hazel caught one fish and Speed caught two.

Next we went through several of the huge display tents and also went by some of the wildlife displays. They had several trailers with lots of different local and exotic reptiles, etc. in them. A couple of the displays were open so the kids could pet some of the animals.
The display tents were really cool. There were lots of animal skins and skulls and casts of animal tracks as well as lots of live animals. One of our favorite sections had a bunch of birds you can find in Arizona, including a peregrine falcon. We made sure to get some shots of that one to share with our own Per. :)
After checking out the first tent or two, we looked at the map and realized we were maybe 1/3 of the way through all that the expo had to offer. This was several hours into the day too! It was clear that we weren't going to make it through everything so we started being more picky about what we wanted to see and we resolved to show up earlier next year. :)
So for the rest of the time we were there, we watched the bird show (which was really fun) and made sure to hit up the big fish trailer (where you could watch a bunch of local fish swimming around and talk to the guys about how to catch them, etc.), and the vendor tent to talk to different people about hunting tips and equipment.
We stopped at Sonic on our way home for drinks since it was so hot and then (of course) went swimming as soon as we got home and the kids got one of their favorite dinners: peanut butter and jelly. It's nice when kids are easy to please. :)
